A resin set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It captures the XM159 underwing rocket pod for unguided rockets of 2.75 inch caliber, that is 70 mm. Pods of this type were carried on light aircraft and on helicopters, and the front face with its even pattern of tube mouths is one of the most striking details of the whole store. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory for the pylon of a model that is already built.
The XM159 is a nineteen-tube pod of cylindrical shape, in which the tubes are arranged in an even bundle. It belongs to the family of American pods for unguided rockets of 2.75 inch caliber, within which there are also smaller seven-tube variants for machines with a lower load. The number of tubes is in fact the quickest way to tell the individual types apart in a photograph. For a modeler the front face of the pod is the key part: on injection-molded parts the mouths of the tubes tend to be blind or shallow, whereas a resin casting can hold noticeable depth and a thin wall between the openings.
Wash the castings in warm water with detergent to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter and level the surfaces with abrasive paper, so that the body of the pod stays straight and the face square. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting. The body is sprayed in a base shade and the mouths of the tubes are then darkened strongly, which emphasizes the depth; a fine highlight on the edges and light traces of wear add realism to the pod. Before gluing, check that both pods on the wing sit at the same angle to the axis of the aircraft.
This is a detail accessory, not a stand-alone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
