About product

Yak-3: a photo-etched cockpit set in 1:48 scale from Brengun

An accessory set of photo-etched metal parts intended for detailing the cockpit of a Yak-3 model in 1:48 scale. On its own it is not an airplane model or a part of one that could be built separately: these are parts that in a finished cockpit replace or complete features simplified in shape in injected plastic.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Photo-etching is produced by chemically etching an outline out of thin metal sheet, so a part is a few tenths of a millimeter thick. An injection mold does not allow such thinness; a plastic part has to be thicker for the material to flow. That is exactly why photo-etched parts suit what is thin sheet metal or wire in reality too: the cockpit sidewalls, levers and rods, instrument bezels and the seat belts. In 1:48 scale an open cockpit is clearly visible and the difference in the thickness of the edges is apparent at first glance.

Tips for working it

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not by twisting: photo-etched metal ripples easily at a bend. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades so that the edge is sharp. Longer or more complexly shaped parts bend better after a brief anneal over a flame, when the metal softens. Degrease the photo-etched parts with alcohol before painting and spray a base coat, otherwise paint will not hold on the smooth metal and will peel. It is bonded with super glue applied with a pin, and in places that show through, thin white glue for glazing helps.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the Yak-3 with the cockpit open.
  • Those who want to complete a cockpit without having to make parts out of sheet metal themselves.
  • Modelers with experience of bending and gluing photo-etched parts.
  • Builders of competition models, where the detail of the interior is judged.

The accessory set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory photo-etched set for a cockpit. The Yak-3 kit in 1:48 scale itself has to be bought separately.

Most often super glue applied in a small amount with a pin or a wire. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal.

Yes. The set is supplied unpainted. Degrease the metal first and spray a base coat, and only then paint.
