About product

UH-60A Black Hawk masks 1:48, the BASIC level (New Ware)

A set of cut masks in kabuki paper for a model of the American multi-purpose UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the helicopter but an accessory that saves the most tiresome part of painting — cutting tape for the glazing. The designation BASIC at New Ware expresses the extent of the set: the basic level deals above all with masking the clear parts, while the higher levels add further elements. It is therefore sensible to check the exact contents of a particular level against the data given by the manufacturer before you buy.

Why it pays off on a helicopter

The cabin of the Black Hawk has extensive glazing including side windows and lower view panels, and the frames between them are thin and curved. Tape cut by hand is hard to keep straight in that geometry, so the edges of the frames tend to be wavy and unevenly wide — and that shows more on a finished model than many an elaborate resin accessory. A pre-cut mask removes that problem and at the same time makes sure that all the frames are the same width.

Usage tips

First wash the clear parts and let them dry completely, so that no grease from your fingers is left on them. Take the mask off the backing with tweezers, lay it in place dry and only then press the edges down. Kabuki paper can be stretched into a slight curve, so it will seat even on domed glazing. Spray thinly and rather more often; let the first coat be in the color of the interior or the shade of the frames. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly touch dry, and keep the rest of the sheet on its original backing — it will come in useful for masking other parts.

Who the masks are for

  • Builders of helicopters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who do not want to cut frames out of tape by hand
  • Anyone interested in clean and even edges on the glazing
  • Beginners who are learning to spray clear parts

The masks are an accessory for a model. The kit and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the designation of the extent of the set. The basic level concentrates on masking the clear parts, while the higher levels add further elements. Check the exact contents on the box and in the instructions supplied.

It is not. These are masks only, to be used on a model in 1:48 scale bought separately.

A thin yellowish masking material with slightly pliable fibers. It holds its shape, can be stretched into a curve and leaves no adhesive on the surface once removed.

Press the edges of the mask down properly, spray the first coat in the color of the base or of the frames and then put the main shade on thinly in several passes.
