A model of a portal crane from Luftwaffe airfields, 1:35 scale serves as a striking structural feature of a diorama with maintenance of equipment.
Responsibility details are not available.
This model of a portal crane of the kind used on German airfields during the Second World War is meant as a structural feature of a diorama, not as an aircraft or a vehicle in its own right. The frame straddles the machine under repair and makes it possible to lift an engine or another heavy assembly. In 1:35 scale it is a fairly large structure, which will give a scene height and a clear center of attention.
Changing an engine or a propeller could not be managed with bare hands under field conditions. Ground units therefore carried portable gantries with them, which could be put up practically anywhere. The structure stood over the aircraft and the lifting block and tackle hung from the cross beam. Scenes of maintenance are among the most rewarding subjects precisely because bustle, mess and people in motion arise around them naturally.
Lay the area out before you put the crane up: it needs room around it and it has to be clear what is being worked on. Assemble the structure on a flat surface, so that it does not twist. The painting will take proper working wear, scuffed metal on the edges, greasy streaks and dust. Add crates, tools and figures of technicians; the crane will not make a story on its own, and only its surroundings give it sense.
