A printed sheet with the German lozenge camouflage pattern in the five-color version for the lower surfaces of a model in the large 1:32 scale. The pattern covers continuous areas of the covering, so the lengthy masking and spraying of polygonal fields falls away, where in this scale every inaccuracy shows.
At the close of the First World War German aircraft makers stopped spraying camouflage and began using fabric with a printed pattern of polygonal fields. It was faster, cheaper and it reliably broke up the outline of the machine at a distance. The lower surfaces were given a lighter set of shades than the upper ones, because they were looked at against the sky. The five-color variant is, together with the four-color one, among the most frequently reproduced.
The artwork on the sheet is not rendered as fresh factory paint. The shades are muted, the texture of the fabric is visible across the surface and there is a slight irregularity of the overprint, that is exactly how the covering looked after some time under sun and rain. The model thereby gains a more credible surface without your having to weather the area afterward.
Prepare the base smooth and glossy; on matte paint a silvery veil forms under the decal. Cut the sheet into strips that follow on from the seams of the covering, and rather with a small overlap. Leave the piece in water only long enough for it to be moved off the paper, and transfer it to a place dampened beforehand. Press the water out from under the film with a soft cloth in the direction from the center to the edges. The pattern is drawn into the engraved lines and transitions by softener, and once dry, varnish the surface over.
