The short takeoff run and vertical landing of the B version are made possible by a fan set right behind the cockpit and by an exhaust nozzle that swivels straight down. Because of that, this form of the machine has large doors on the upper and lower fuselage that the other variants do not have, and strips with a different surface treatment run around their edges.
The machine was created above all for the US Marine Corps, which replaced its Harriers with it, and from there it spread further. It is operated by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force from the decks of aircraft carriers, by the Italian Marina Militare and by several other countries that need a combat aircraft able to do without a long concrete runway.
The package consists of precisely cut parts intended for the large model from Trumpeter. The method is the reverse of ordinary masking with tape: first an all-over base is laid down, and only then are the individual segments placed on it and the covering coat sprayed over them. The base must be perfectly cured, otherwise it will come away with the film, and it is better to turn the pressure in the airbrush down so that the paint does not run under the edge.
A large scale forgives fewer mistakes than a small one, because every irregularity of an edge is visible at a glance. So it pays to start with the smaller areas on the wing and to leave the long fuselage patterns until last, when you have the thinning worked out. It is good to unify the finished surface with a clear matte varnish: it evens out small differences in gloss and protects the edges from rubbing while the small parts are being fitted. Neither the paints nor the kit itself belongs in the shipment.
