The Focke-Wulf Fw 189 is a German twin-engined reconnaissance and observation aircraft of the Second World War. You will recognize it at first glance: the crew sits in a glazed nacelle in the middle of the wing, from which there is a view practically in every direction, and the tail surfaces are carried by a pair of booms running back from the engine nacelles. Such an arrangement came about precisely for the sake of the view, because the main task of the machine was observing the battlefield and working with ground units, not fighting. The A-1 version is the basic production reconnaissance rendition. The qualifier in the name aims at the machines which flew with foreign users, that is outside the Luftwaffe.
The model fits in the palm of a hand, and the work on it matches that. The parts are small, so tweezers, a sharp blade and good light pay off. Symmetry is crucial: both engine nacelles, both booms and the tail surfaces have to sit at the same height, otherwise the model looks twisted. So seat them dry and check the joints from the front and from above until the glue has set.
The glazing of the nacelle makes the look of the whole model. Draw the frames with a fine brush or mask them with narrow strips of tape, and spray the interior shade first and only then the top color. Apply the paint in thin coats, so the detail of the surface is not filled in at a small scale. Transfer the decals one at a time onto a gloss base and let them tack off before you move them into position.
