A resin replacement for the ESCAPAC 1C-3 type ejection seat for Douglas A-4F, A-4G, A-4H, A-4K and A-4M models in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Douglas developed its own escape system for its light carrier attack aircraft. The company designation ESCAPAC came from shortening the words escape package, and it was a rocket-powered seat that replaced the older British designs fitted to the first Skyhawk production batches. The 1C-3 form appeared around the mid-1960s and went with the A-4F, the export A-4G for the Royal Australian Navy, the Israeli A-4H, the New Zealand A-4K and the later Marine Corps A-4M.
The casting captures the shape of the shell, the padding of the backrest, the headrest and the small hardware of the straps and the firing handles, that is the elements that cannot be got into injection-molded plastic so finely. It is intended for direct replacement: the seat from the box is removed and the new one is seated in the cockpit tub.
The casting is held on a casting block, which is separated with a fine-toothed saw; the place of the cut is then sanded down. It is a good idea to wash the resin in lukewarm water with detergent before painting, so that the remains of the mold release agent disappear. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with a two-part epoxy compound.
In color terms the shell tends to be in a dark aircraft gray shade, the padding in black and the straps in a sandy or olive color with bold yellow and black handles. It is precisely the contrast of the handles and the safety placards that makes an open cockpit a compelling place on a model.
In a display case it pays to stand the model so that the cockpit is seen obliquely from above, because it is from this angle that the seat shows best and the contrast between the dark shell and the light straps comes out.
