An open exhaust nozzle of the engine for a Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II model in 1:72 scale, a resin casting for the Japanese kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
Of the three versions of this fifth-generation machine, the C is the least conspicuous and at the same time the most reworked. It received a larger wing with folding tips, heavier landing gear, a strengthened structure and an arrestor hook, so that it would stand a catapult launch and being caught by a wire on deck. It entered the combat squadrons of the navy at the close of the last decade and made its first cruise with an aircraft carrier shortly afterwards.
The F135 engine from Pratt & Whitney gives the machine a thrust of over one hundred ninety kilonewtons with afterburning. Its nozzle is made up of movable petals whose overlap and stepping are clearly visible on the real aircraft and can be captured in injection-molded plastic only roughly.
The accessory replaces the end section in the opened state, that is as it looks after the engine has been shut down on deck. The inner side of the petals carries ribbing, which is served well by a dark base and a dry brush. The surface changes quickly on machines in service: from a metallic light shade to the golden and purple casts of burnt steel. That is built up with several thin passes of smoke and rust color over a base of gloss metal.
The part is separated from the casting gate with a thin cut and the mating surface is leveled on abrasive paper laid on a flat board. The seam against the fuselage is then filled with a thin layer of filler, applied so that it does not run inside between the petals.
Anyone building the machine with a closed nozzle will reach for a different form of the same accessory; the two forms side by side show how markedly the silhouette of the aircraft's tail changes according to whether the engine is running.
