About product

Texture roller with a handle - Dutch brick paving, the smaller size

A roller with a handle from the brand Green Stuff World with an engraved pattern of paving made of narrow bricks laid in a dense regular grid. This type of surface is typical of the streets and squares of European towns, and it differs from classic stone paving in the elongated shape of its elements. The roller serves to impress the structure into modeling compound, not to be glued onto a model. The name gives a scale range of 1:64 to 1:48, which the size of the bricks corresponds to, and variants for other scales are carried in the range as well.

Use

  • Brick paving of streets, sidewalks and squares on dioramas
  • Figure bases with an urban or a village surface
  • Courtyards, passageways and approach roads to buildings
  • Repeated production of a uniform texture on several bases

How to work with the roller

Roll modeling compound, two-part epoxy putty or clay out into an even layer. Moisten the roller and the compound lightly beforehand or dust them with talc, so that the material does not drag and the pattern stays sharp. Run the roller smoothly in one pass; with a brick pattern it is worth watching the direction of the courses as well, so that the individual impressions follow on from one another. Rather leave the edges of the area irregular and tidy them up once it has dried, which looks more natural than a straight edge. After curing, paint the area with a base brick shade, lighten it with a dry brush and bring out the joints with a dark wash. Individual bricks shaded irregularly will give the surface life. Clean the roller while the remains of the compound are still damp.

Who the roller is for

It suits builders of dioramas with a European urban setting, figure modelers and tabletop gamers who make their own bases and terrain. The work is undemanding and even a beginner will manage it.

Modeling compound, putty and a board are not included in the package. The roller is a tool for repeated use; it is not a part of a model.
