A combination of a small hex head bolt and a strikingly larger washer. It is the washer that does the work on a model: it widens the mating surface, creates a light ring around the head and the joint therefore reads even from a distance at which a half-millimeter head on its own would be lost. The dimension given for this item is 0.5 mm.
In places where a bolted joint is visible and where it should be clear that the joint is holding something: brackets on the frame, engine covers, the joints of sheet-metal parts, the mounting of tanks and footpegs, edgings and flanges. It also works well where a washer is used in reality because of a soft material, that is on plastic covers and fiberglass parts. One uniform size across the set guarantees that the joints on the whole model look the same, which the eye appreciates more than a parade of different sizes.
Parts of this size are lost unbelievably easily, so work in an enclosed space with no draft and over a surface on which you can see them. For picking them up a stick with a piece of wax or a moistened tip works well; tweezers like to shoot them away. Drill the hole square, dose the glue into the hole with a wire, never onto the head, and seat the bolt so that the washer sits down over its whole area. Let the joint dry untouched until the glue has firmed up; tightening it with tweezers tilts the small head.
For modelers who finish motorcycles, cars and machinery in detail and are bothered by the difference between a real joint and its cast substitute. A model, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
