This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from Academy represents the American fifth-generation F-35B multi-role fighter in the version for the United States Marine Corps. The box offers a choice of several marking options tied to the VMFA-242 Bats squadron and to service in the Pacific. The kit contains a well-worked-out cockpit, the weapons bay and the landing gear with finely engraved panel lines; it is the B version with a short takeoff and a vertical landing (STOVL).
The F-35B Lightning II is a stealth multi-role aircraft designed with an emphasis on a low radar signature and modern sensors. The B version is the only one in the family fitted with a lift fan behind the cockpit and a swiveling engine nozzle, thanks to which it manages a short takeoff and a vertical landing from the decks of light carriers and from forward sites. The VMFA-242 Bats squadron of the US Marine Corps operates in the Pacific area.
Use liquid modeling cement on the plastic for firm, clean joints. The cockpit glazing deserves masking so that it stays clear; masks will speed the work up markedly. Assemble and paint the external stores and the landing gear bays before closing the airframe up. The low-visibility gray comes out well sprayed with an airbrush and with restrained emphasis on the panels; the key to a realistic result is a cleanly seated canopy and precisely applied low-contrast decals.
