The real subject

The Tirpitz was the second unit of the Bismarck class and the largest battleship the Kriegsmarine built in the Second World War. She spent practically her whole service in Norwegian fjords, from where the mere threat of her sailing tied down considerable enemy forces. On a model the expansive main deck is the most visible part, because it is exactly what the viewer looks down on first.

What the deck offers

A deck from the range of wooden decks, cut for 1:700 scale and for the Trumpeter kit listed under the manufacturer's part number 05712. It is laid onto the plastic deck of the model and replaces the engraved representation of the planks with the real grain of wood, which painting and shading alone cannot imitate. In a small scale it is one of the most effective interventions in the look of a model of all, because the ratio of the deck area to the whole silhouette is the greatest here.

Laying tips

First rid the plastic deck of projections, burrs and unevenness, so that the part is not lifted anywhere, and degrease the surface. Check in the manufacturer's instructions whether the deck has an adhesive layer of its own or is glued separately. Lay it on dry first and check the outlines around the turrets and the superstructures, and only then settle it permanently; moving it back is difficult. Fit the superstructures, the armament and the equipment only after the deck is laid. The surface is usually left in its natural shade, and if you want to tone it, try the procedure on an offcut first.
