Artwox Model 1:700 a wooden deck with masks and photo-etched parts for the battleship Tirpitz 1944 is an aftermarket accessory, not a kit. The veneer deck with a self-adhesive backing is stuck straight onto the plastic deck of the model the set is cut for. Intended for the Trumpeter 05712 kit.

The set contains a deck of thin wood veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and a self-adhesive back, plus a masking template and photo-etched parts. It is an accessory to a plastic kit, not the model itself. The outlines are cut to measure for the particular kit named with this product, so check before buying that this is the one you have. With another release of the same ship the superstructures and the hatches will be elsewhere and the deck will not fit. The set is intended for the Trumpeter 05712 kit.
First rid the plastic deck of mold flash and seam lines and sand it flat with fine abrasive paper. Every unevenness shows through thin veneer as a bump or a hollow. Then degrease the surface with alcohol and let it dry perfectly: on greasy plastic a self-adhesive layer holds only apparently and after a few weeks the edges start to lift. Before you take the protective film off, lay the whole deck on dry and check where there is play and where trimming will be needed.
The veneer can be left in its natural shade and only flattened, or it can be toned with a stain into a warmer or grayer tone. The gaps between the planks are picked out by a very thin dark wash applied with the tip of a brush; pull the excess away at once, while it is damp. Apply the protective clear coat in thin layers and rather a matte one, so that the deck does not gain an unnatural sheen. It is precisely this grain of the wood that is the reason why veneer looks livelier even in 1:700 scale than an engraved imitation of planks on plastic.
