About product

HMS Ithuriel, as in 1942, 1:700 scale, a kit from IBG models

A plastic kit of an I-class destroyer capturing the ship in her 1942 state. IBG models builds its ship ranges in 1:700 scale on fine surface relief and well articulated superstructure; the model is conceived as a collector piece for a display case, where ships of various classes can be compared side by side. The year in the name is not decoration: on destroyers both the armament and the equipment changed during the war, so the model corresponds to a specific moment in the ship's service, not to the general form of the class.

The real subject

HMS Ithuriel was an I-class destroyer serving in the Royal Navy. Ships of this class were typical interwar destroyers: a slender hull, medium-caliber gun armament in open or lightly protected mountings, torpedo tube mounts on deck and equipment for fighting submarines. In the course of the Second World War these ships went through modifications in favor of anti-aircraft armament and radar equipment, because surface vessels had ceased to be the main threat in escort service. The year 1942 falls in a period of intensive convoy and escort duty, including deployment in the Mediterranean.

Building and painting tips

Plan the procedure according to whether you are building the full hull or a waterline version. Spray the deck before you fit the superstructures, otherwise you will not reach the roots of the parts. Glue the torpedo tube mounts and the light anti-aircraft weapons on at the end in spots with super glue, so that they do not break off while handling. You can pick out the engraved detail of the deck with a thin wash that runs into the lines; wipe off the excess with a cotton swab along the planking. The camouflage patterns of British ships are done with masking tape with sharp edges: redraw the diagram to scale beforehand, so that the breaks of the pattern sit on the transitions between the hull and the superstructures. Add the aerials and the rigging with thin fishing line or stretched sprue right at the very end.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of British warships in 1:700 scale
  • For those interested in escort and convoy vessels of the Second World War
  • For modelers who want the ship in a faithful state of the given year
  • For a build as a waterline version in a sea scene with waves

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a group of British destroyers of interwar design with a common hull and armament. The individual ships differed in the modifications carried out during the war.

Destroyers were rearmed during the war. The year 1942 determines the specific form of the armament and equipment that the model captures.

Railings, ladders and aerials are commonly added in 1:700 scale with a separate photo-etched set.

Best with masking tape cut to a diagram redrawn beforehand. Hold the airbrush perpendicular to the edge of the tape and spray thin coats.
