A dry fit pays off

Before taking the covering film off, lay all the veneer pieces on the plastic deck dry and go over them edge by edge. You are looking for overhangs, missing openings for hatches and places where the veneer would reach into the base of a superstructure. Whatever needs adjusting, trim on the piece while it is still off the model, with a fresh blade and against a hard surface. After gluing, correction is no longer possible; the self-adhesive backing holds firmly and the veneer tears when peeled off.

Working around hatches and superstructures

The deck of a battleship is densely dotted with hatches, hatchways and feet. The veneer has the openings pre-cut, but slight fine-tuning is needed almost every time, because the tolerances of plastic differ from one example to the next. Around circular openings it is safer to take material off in small steps and keep testing. Fit the photo-etched parts only after the deck is glued and fixed, so that they do not get in the way while you press the veneer down.
