An accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The set holds a thin wooden veneer cut to the outline of the deck areas of a British battleship in 1:700 scale, with the printed laying of the planks and a self-adhesive back. Once it is glued on, the model gains a surface with the real texture of wood, with fine gaps and the natural irregularity of grain, which paint cannot replace, and that even on very small areas where painting the planks by hand would be practically impossible. The veneer is cut for the Tamiya 31615 kit.
HMS Prince of Wales was a British battleship of the King George V class, completed at the beginning of the 1940s. The class was marked by main armament of 356 mm guns arranged in a combination of quadruple and twin turrets, strong armor protection and extensive anti-aircraft armament. In May 1941 the ship took part in the action in the Denmark Strait and at the end of the same year was deployed in the South China Sea, where she was sunk by air attack. Modelers appreciate the compact silhouette with its markedly broken-up forward deck on the ships of this class.
Before gluing, decide how you will paint the surroundings. On British ships complex camouflage schemes are often built, and masking tape leaves marks on wood, so spray the hull and the superstructures first and glue the deck on last. Sand the surface, fill it and degrease it with alcohol. Uncover the film on the back in sections, set the part by the longitudinal axis and press it down with a soft cloth from the center. Trim the overlaps around the barbettes with a new blade guided flat. The wood then only needs fine-tuning with a thin glaze and a dark wash in the gaps. Sealing with a matte varnish evens the sheen out with the surrounding areas and protects the veneer during handling.
