About product

HMS Rodney 1:700 — Trumpeter

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British battleship HMS Rodney in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter. The set holds the parts for the hull, the superstructures, the gun turrets, the armament and the small deck fittings, together with a decal sheet and instructions. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread one for models of large warships — the finished model fits into an ordinary display case while keeping legible detail. The build can be taken further with photo-etched accessories, especially railings and ladders.

The real subject

HMS Rodney was a British battleship of the Nelson class, brought into service at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s. Her most conspicuous feature is the unusual arrangement of the main armament: nine 406 mm guns were concentrated in three triple turrets placed forward, ahead of the superstructure, which gave the ship an entirely original silhouette. The solution came about as a consequence of the limits set by the naval treaties of the day — the designers had to reconcile heavy armament and armor with a displacement limit. During the Second World War the ship took part in the action against the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941 and later supported the Normandy landings with gunfire.

Building and painting tips

First decide whether you will build the model with a full hull or in the waterline version — the way it is presented and any stand follow from that. Paint the hull and the decks separately, before you fit the superstructures; the deck is hard to reach once they are installed. For the gun barrels and the thin masts use liquid cement in minimal amounts, so that the detail is not eaten away. The gray shades of British ships differ according to the period and the scheme, so choose according to the particular subject. The model is lifted markedly by photo-etched railings and ladders bought separately. Keep the patina restrained — rust streaking under the anchor hawses and a light highlighting of the decks is usually enough.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on warships in 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Royal Navy of the Second World War
  • Builders who want to take the model further with photo-etched accessories
  • Modelers with at least basic experience of tiny parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The arrangement came about as a compromise between heavy armament, armor and the displacement limit set by the naval treaties of the day.

In 1:700 scale it is a model that fits into an ordinary display case.

Yes. Railings, ladders and crane jibs in etched metal lift the model markedly, because elements that thin cannot be molded in plastic.

We recommend checking the instructions of the particular set. Make the decision between a full hull and waterline before you start the build.
