This is not a model of the ship but an accessory to a kit already bought. The package holds a veneer cutout of the deck in 1:700 scale with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive base. The veneer is laid straight onto the plastic deck of a kit and thus replaces painting and the scribing of the gaps by hand. The result is a surface that has the real pattern of wood including the irregularities of the growth rings, which is imitated with paint only with great difficulty. The veneer is cut for the Trumpeter 05795 kit.
HMS Warspite was a British battleship of the Queen Elizabeth class. She entered service during the First World War and in the interwar period went through an extensive rebuild that changed the superstructures, the propulsion and the arrangement of the secondary armament. The figure 1942 in the name refers to the particular configuration of the ship the deck cutout is cut for. Laid wooden decks were standard on British battleships of that time, so a veneer surface matches the real subject better than smooth plastic.
The preparation of the base is the key. First rid the plastic deck of raised marks and parting lines, sand it flat and degrease it, or the adhesive will not hold. Always try the veneer dry first, without the backing film taken off, and check whether the cutouts seat on the superstructures and the bases of the turrets. Then take the film off in sections and lay the veneer down gradually from the center toward the edges, so that no air gets under it. The finished surface is best gone over with matte varnish or a thin stain, which evens the shade out and protects the veneer against soiling during further building.
This is an accessory to a ship kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
