An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese firm Fujimi in the 1:700 ship scale. The name narrows down two things at once: the subject is Ise in her hybrid form, that is as a battleship with a flight deck aft, and the model is done as a full hull, with the hull including the underwater part. It is therefore built on a stand or into a dock, not on a water surface. The contents of the package, the number of parts and whether a stand is included are stated on the box and in the instructions.
Ise was the lead ship of the battleship class of the same name, which the Imperial Japanese Navy brought into service while the First World War was still on. In the second half of the Second World War she went through a fundamental conversion: the two aft main-caliber gun turrets were removed and in their place a short flight deck with a hangar and catapults for floatplanes was built. The result was a hybrid between a battleship and an aircraft carrier, which kept heavy gun armament forward and was at the same time to carry its own reconnaissance and strike aircraft. This unusual difference in silhouette makes Ise one of the most striking ship subjects of her period.
A full hull model needs a firm stand, so prepare one at the very start. Spray the underwater part separately and run the dividing line along masking tape. The aft flight deck is the most conspicuous area of the whole model, so paint it separately and set its shade apart from the steel decks forward. Finish the superstructures and the decks before gluing them to the hull. A dark wash will bring out the engraved detail and a dry brush will pull out the small anti-aircraft armament. Glue the masts, the gun barrels and the catapults with cyanoacrylate glue; photo-etched railings will lift the model markedly.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
