An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima in 1:700 scale, that is, in the standard scale for collector models of warships. The real subject is the supply vessel Oumi with the hull designation AOE-426, which serves with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Aoshima is one of the traditional Japanese makers of ship models and its modern vessels are among the kits with well worked-out shapes.
Oumi is the second ship of the Mashu class, which are the largest supply vessels of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. She entered service in 2006. The ship has a length of around 221 meters and a standard displacement of roughly 13500 tons. Her task is to replenish fuel, ammunition, water and supplies for other vessels directly at sea, which allows a task force to operate for a long time far from home ports. The tall lattice masts for the transfer of fuel and cargo under way and the spacious stern deck with a hangar for a helicopter are characteristic features.
In 1:700 scale the cleanliness of the work decides. First glue the hull up and sand the joints over, and only then set the superstructures in place. Apply the gray finish of the hull and the superstructures with an airbrush in thin layers, otherwise the fine engraving will be lost. It is advisable to set the deck off in tone and to bring it out with a thin wash so that the details stand out. The fine structures (cranes, masts) are fragile in this scale, so fit them only at the close. If you want to push the model higher, adding photo-etched railings is an option. Do not forget to seat the finished ship on a stand or on a base with a water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
