A plastic kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Unryu from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The full-hull version means the whole hull from the keel up, so the model also shows the shape of the underwater part and is displayed on a base. The 1:700 scale is the standard for warships and allows a collection to be built in which the sizes of the individual vessels are comparable with one another. The Unryu was the first ship of the class of the same name of medium aircraft carriers, which the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered as a quickly buildable replacement for the heavy losses of 1942. In design she drew on the ship Hiryu, but she had a reworked island and strengthened anti-aircraft armament. She was taken into service in August 1944. She never received an air group of her own; in December 1944 she sailed with a cargo for the Philippine theater and was sunk in the East China Sea by an American submarine. Of the three completed ships of the series she was thus the only one lost on a direct combat voyage.
What matters most is the flatness of the flight deck and a clean transition between the hull and the deck, so glue on a flat support and sand the joints patiently. Build the island with the bridge and the funnel as an assembly of its own and fit them only after the deck has been painted. The anti-aircraft guns and the searchlights are small, so it pays to paint them while still on the sprue and to nip them off just before fitting. Spray the underwater part and the waterline separately with masking tape, or the line will bleed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
