About product

ORP Garland, as in 1944, 1:700 scale, a kit from IBG models

A plastic kit of a G-class destroyer in the version corresponding to 1944. IBG models is a Polish manufacturer that works on ships in 1:700 scale systematically, and its models have fine surface relief and well broken down superstructure. The 1:700 scale is the classic one for collector ranges of warships: a single destroyer takes up little room in a display case. Giving a specific year in the name is a substantial piece of information, because the armament and the equipment of destroyers changed during the war, and the model corresponds to the late wartime state.

The real subject

ORP Garland was a G-class destroyer built originally for the Royal Navy and serving under the Polish flag during the Second World War. Destroyers of this class were all-purpose escort ships: medium-caliber gun armament, torpedo tube mounts and depth charges for fighting submarines. The ship made its mark above all in protecting convoys in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and on the northern route. During the war ships of this size went through modifications: some of the torpedo tube mounts and of the main armament gave way to anti-aircraft weapons and radar equipment, so the late form differed distinctly from the original one.

Building and painting tips

With ships in 1:700 scale, decide first whether you will build the model with the full hull or as a waterline version on a sea base, because the painting procedure differs accordingly. Glue the superstructures and the funnels on only after the deck has been sprayed, so that you can reach everywhere with a brush. Leave the tiny gun turrets and the anti-aircraft weapons for last and bond them in spots with super glue. Railings, ladders and aerials are dealt with at this scale by photo-etched parts or by thin fishing line; once the taut threads are glued on, go over them with thinned paint so that they blend in. Use an airbrush at low pressure for painting, make the camouflage transitions soft and pick out the sharp edges with a dry brush. The weathering has to stay restrained: rust streaks under the hawse pipes and a light lightening of the decks are enough.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of warships in 1:700 scale
  • For those interested in escort vessels and the convoy war
  • For modelers who want a faithful late wartime state of the ship
  • For a build as a waterline version in a flat sea scene

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The armament and the equipment of destroyers changed during the war. The year specifies which state of the ship the model corresponds to, in this case the late wartime one.

Modelers often arrange the waterline version themselves by cutting off the lower part of the hull and using a base of their own.

Railings and aerials are commonly added at this scale with a separate photo-etched set.

The basic build yes, but the tiny parts of the superstructures and the armament call for tweezers, patience and good light.
