Injection-molded plastic kit of the large Slava class guided missile cruiser in 1:700 scale. This scale is the most widespread for warship models, so the finished model sits well in a collection beside other surface units and is easy to combine with the accessories available, such as photo-etched parts or small aircraft in the same scale. The maker is Trumpeter, which has long focused on ship models in this scale.
The Slava class cruisers are large surface units with their main anti-ship missile armament in pairs of angled launch canisters along the superstructure, complemented by air defense systems, guns and a hangar for a shipboard helicopter. The characteristic silhouette is formed by a massive superstructure with extensive radar equipment and the funnel section in the rear half of the hull. Varyag is one of the units of this class in service with the Russian Navy.
A model in this scale stands on clean work with small parts. Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel or sprue nippers and sand the remains of the gates so that no flash is left on the hull. Use thin modeling cement applied with a fine brush for the plastic, and cyanoacrylate for any photo-etched accessories. Lay down a thin coat of primer before painting, and only then spray with an airbrush in thin coats so that the fine engraving of the deck is preserved. Handle the boundary between the hull and the underwater section with masking tape. The detail of the superstructure comes out with a weak wash and a fine dry-brushing of the edges. Even the surface out with a flat clear coat at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
