About product

Three-stranded ship railing with sagging strands 1:700 (Metallic Details)

A set of photo-etched parts from thin metal sheet that replaces coarse plastic or entirely missing railings on the decks of ship models in 1:700 scale. The railing has three horizontal strands between the stanchions and the characteristic sag of the strands that on a real ship arises from the weight of the steel cable itself. It is precisely this sag that sets the set apart from ordinary straight railings and gives the model a soft, realistic look. The package contains a photo-etched fret from which you cut the length you need according to the extent of the deck.

What the set is for

Railings are one of the details that most give away the scale and the quality of a build on a model in a small scale. Plastic moldings tend to be many times thicker in proportion to the real subject than they actually are. Photo-etched metal has a thickness in hundredths of a millimeter, so it looks credible even under a magnifier. You will use the set on the main decks, the walkways of the superstructure, bridges and catwalks, and it can be used across periods and types of ship, because it is a universal part, not a part tied to one particular ship.

Fitting and painting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, not with pliers, otherwise the photo-etched strip will deform. Bend the stanchions to a right angle over the edge of a steel ruler or in a photo-etch bending tool. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount with a pin, or they are soldered. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and apply a thin metal primer, otherwise the paint will not hold. It is painted with an airbrush in two passes from both sides, and a final dark wash accents the stanchions and softens the transition to the deck.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of ship models in 1:700 scale who want to raise the level of detail
  • Modelers who already have experience of working with photo-etched parts
  • Those who build a model for a display case or for a competition and need a realistic deck silhouette
  • Completing older kits where the railing is either missing or only suggested

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the model of the ship itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
