The set is an accessory for the plastic kit of the battleship USS California BB-44 as she was in 1941, not a model on its own. The name gives three components of the package: a self-adhesive wooden deck with pre-printed plank laying, covering masks for painting and photo-etched metal parts. The veneer goes straight onto the plastic deck and takes over its shape, including the openings for superstructures and turret bases.
The commonest mistake is to start at an edge. The veneer then shifts and at the opposite end a fraction of a millimeter of deviation arises, which in 1:700 scale shows as crooked planks. Work from the middle, therefore: uncover only the middle part of the backing, line the part up against the longitudinal axis and the turret bases, and only then work toward the bow and the stern. Force the air out with a soft wooden stick in a continuous stroke, so that no bubble is caught.
Around superstructures, hatches and breakwaters, never pull the veneer by force. Where the openings are tight, it is better to ease the plastic edge gently with a file than the veneer. Trim the overhang with a fresh blade run along the edge of the plastic, and change the blade often. The bow with its marked curve is easier to manage if you work it lightly with a damp finger and let it take the shape, pressing it down only then. Fine-tune the shade with a weak stain and seal the surface with matte varnish.
