This item is a color variant of the wooden deck for a model of the American battleship in 1:700 scale. It differs from the basic version in tone: the planks are finished in a dark blue-gray shade instead of the natural color of wood. It is an accessory for a kit you have already bought, not a model. The set is meant for the Trumpeter 05784 kit.
Later in the war the US Navy stained wooden decks dark so that a ship would contrast less with the water when seen from above. That leaves the modeler with a choice: natural wood is more striking in a display case, while the dark tone is closer to the practice of late wartime Pacific operations. The blue variant suits above all a build where the whole model follows a consistent late wartime scheme and the deck is not meant to overpower the rest of the ship.
USS California belonged to the American Tennessee class of battleships. After the damage she took at Pearl Harbor she went through a complete rebuild that markedly changed the silhouette of her superstructures and the make-up of her anti-aircraft armament. Her appearance in 1945 catches the ship in that modernized configuration.
The procedure is the same as with the natural variant: sand and degrease the plastic, peel the film off in sections, lay from the middle and press down over a soft pad. With dark veneer it is worth expecting any light scuffed edges to show more, so touch them up with dark paint after trimming.
