This set from Artwox Model is not a model but an aftermarket accessory to a plastic kit of the aircraft carrier USS Essex CV-9 in 1:700 scale. The set is cut for the Dragon 7049 kit. That figure is worth watching, because versions for other kits of the same ship exist as well and the name of the vessel alone does not tell which variant is needed. The contents are a thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive back.
The USS Essex CV-9 was the first unit of the class of the same name of aircraft carriers of the US Navy. It was a type that became the backbone of the American carriers of the Second World War, with a wood-covered flight deck, an island superstructure on the starboard side and elevators for moving aircraft between the decks. It is precisely the wooden flight deck that is the most demanding area for a modeler, because it takes up almost the whole upper silhouette.
The flight deck is one enormous area, so check the seating around the elevators and at the island dry before you reach for the film. Take the film off in strips across the deck and press the veneer down gradually with a soft cloth, so that no air stays under it. If the kit allows for marking the flight deck lines, deal with them only on the laid veneer and always in a thin coat, as a heavy one would cover the pattern of the wood. On a wartime flight deck a slightly uneven shade looks good; you will reach it with a very thinned wash applied section by section. Seal it with matte varnish in light passes.
