About product

AH-1G Cobra Early Tails 1:72 (Special Hobby)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby, focused on the early machines. The Early Tails boxing captures the first production Cobras, which had the tail rotor mounted on the left side of the tail boom, unlike the later standard. The enclosed decal sheet covers several attractive machines from Vietnam including one with an interesting camouflage and nose art.

The real subject

The AH-1 Cobra was the first dedicated attack helicopter in the world, developed from the proven UH-1 Huey. A narrow fuselage with a tandem cockpit reduced the frontal silhouette, and under its stub wings and in a rotating turret the Cobra carried machine guns, grenade launchers and unguided rockets. In Vietnam it provided fire support and escorted helicopters; the early machines differed from the later series in a number of details including the position of the tail rotor.

Building and painting tips

This is a kit of the finer kind, so clean the mating surfaces up carefully and test the fit of the fuselage dry. Give attention to the tandem cockpit and its glazing, which should be masked. Glue the joints with liquid cement for plastic and fit the rotor blades and the armament at the end. Paint with an airbrush; olive and multi-color camouflage shows to best effect over a smooth primed surface and a fine wash will emphasize the panel lines.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American helicopters of the Vietnam War
  • Anyone interested in the early versions of the Cobra attack helicopter
  • Slightly advanced modelers who will appreciate a finer kit

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
