A figure set of American infantrymen of the Second World War period in 1:72 scale by Zvezda. It is not a vehicle or aircraft model but an accessory that gives finished vehicles a sense of scale and a scene a story. The figures are supplied as unglued castings in neutral-colored plastic.
The American infantry deployed between 1941 and 1945 was marked by fairly uniform field equipment: helmet, jacket with webbing, belt with pouches and a simple pack. Characteristic is the combination of a bolt-action rifle and a semi-automatic rifle within a single squad, supplemented by a light machine gun and a submachine gun. It is exactly this variety of armament that is the main guide when painting figures in 1:72: the individual figures differ from one another more in how they hold their weapon and in their stance than in the shade of their uniform. Given how small a figure is, the detail is carried above all by the silhouette, that is, the shape of the helmet, the outline of the webbing and the position of the hands.
First clean the castings of flash and parting seams. Figures at this scale benefit from a base coat in a uniform light shade, on which the paints then hold and cover better. Paint the uniform as a flat area, then let a dark wash flow into the folds and finally pick out the edges with a dry brush. Handle the skin in three steps: a base, a darker recess and a lighter application on the raised areas. A face in 1:72 will not take detail; the right contrast works better. Finally unify the surface with a matte varnish so that the figures are not glossy next to matte vehicles.
