Atom bomb Mark 39 is a bomb accessory for aircraft modeling in 1:72 scale from the Black Dog brand. The real subject is a US Air Force thermonuclear weapon from the turn of the 1950s and 1960s.
Responsibility details are not available.
The package offers a weapon object meant for adding to a finished aircraft model, not a whole machine. The 1:72 scale ties it to the most widespread aircraft range, so the bomb suits a bomber and a static display on a stand alike.
The US Air Force introduced the Mark 39 at the end of the 1950s as a thermonuclear weapon markedly lighter than the earlier generation. It therefore fitted into the bomb bays of the B-47 and the supersonic B-58 and became standard armament on the B-52. It allowed a drop from low altitude, which a braking parachute stowed in the tail section served. In 1961 two such bombs came loose from a disintegrating bomber over North Carolina, and that event markedly influenced later safety regulations.
Cylindrical bodies are hard to hold in the hand, so it suits to mount the bomb on a temporary holder and paint it separately from the model. A white base takes on a tint from what is underneath, so it is more sensible to work in thin coats. The metal bands and the lifting lugs gain depth from drybrushing with the minimum of paint on the bristles.
The package holds neither the aircraft nor paints; the customer buys both separately.
