A decal sheet in 1:72 scale with seven particular Avro Vulcan B.2 machines, including the aircraft from Operation Black Buck in 1982. It covers the years 1961 to 1982.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Avro Vulcan was a British strategic bomber with a delta wing that formed the backbone of the V-force nuclear deterrent and stayed in service into the middle of the 1980s. Its huge triangular wing gave the machine an unmistakable silhouette and at the same time an area on which every detail of the markings stands out on a model. The sheet covers seven particular B.2 aircraft and follows the type across its whole career, from British bases of the 1960s to the longest bombing raid of its day.
Represented are XL426 of the commander of No. 83 Squadron at Scampton in 1961, XM600 of No. 9 Squadron from Cottesmore in 1966, XM570 in the maritime radar reconnaissance fit of No. 27 Squadron from Scampton in 1973, XM575 of No. 101 Squadron from Waddington in 1975, XJ781 of No. 12 Squadron from Coningsby in 1963, XH562 of No. 9 Squadron photographed at Masirah in Oman in 1972, and XM607, which flew from the base on Ascension during Operation Black Buck at the turn of April and May 1982.
These are wet decals applied to a finished and varnished model. The base has to be glossy, otherwise a white haze appears under the film, and once dry the whole surface is coated with matte varnish. A decal softener will help the decal settle into the panel lines on the upper surface of the wing, of which the Vulcan has more than enough.
On an aircraft this large the serial numbers and the squadron markings are fairly small, so it pays to work with flat-jawed tweezers and with plenty of water under the film. The surplus water is drawn away by a piece of paper towel held against the side, not by wiping across the decal.
