About product

SPAD 510 in the markings of the 7th Fighter Wing, a 1:72 Azur kit

A plastic kit of the French SPAD 510 biplane fighter in 1:72 scale from the Azur brand. This box is aimed at the machines of the 7th Fighter Wing, that is at the peacetime period of the French Air Force in the second half of the 1930s, when fighter squadrons wore striking colored emblems.

The real subject

The SPAD 510 was the last biplane fighter taken into service with the French Air Force. It first flew in the first half of the 1930s and grew out of a classic layout: a biplane arrangement with fixed landing gear and an open cockpit, a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza 12X series V12 and an armament of four 7.5 mm machine guns. It was agile in a turning fight, but at the very time it was being introduced the all-metal monoplanes with retractable landing gear and enclosed cockpits were coming in, and against those it could hold up neither in speed nor in climb. Only a few dozen were built. It entered service with fighter units in the second half of the 1930s and by the time the war began it had already been moved out of front-line duties.

Building and painting tips

With biplanes the geometry decides. Glue the upper wing using a simple paper or balsa jig that will hold the dihedral and the gap between the flying surfaces, because the struts alone will not hold the assembly straight. Paint the inside of the cockpit and the frame before you close the fuselage up. Spray the main surfaces separately while they are still reachable, because once the whole thing is glued, masking is markedly harder. Run the rigging between the wings at the very end, from stretched sprue or from an elastic thread drawn between pre-drilled points. Coat the area with a gloss varnish before the decals and even the surface out with a matte one once it has dried. Short-run kits usually need more dry-fitting and a little sanding of the mating surfaces than mainstream kits, so count on that when planning your time.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in the French Air Force of the 1930s and in the move from biplanes to monoplanes.
  • For modelers who dare to take on rigging and the build of a biplane wing.
  • For collectors of untypical subjects in a single 1:72 scale.
  • For builders who want colorful peacetime markings in the display case, not just wartime camouflage.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The difference is in the set of markings. This box aims at the peacetime machines of the 7th Fighter Wing, while the sister release is aimed at the later, wartime period.

Rather not. A biplane calls for precise seating of the wings and for running the rigging, which is demanding for a first model. A more experienced modeler will cope with it without trouble.
