An Xtradecal decal sheet in 1:72 scale for the British BAC/EE Lightning interceptor. It is an accessory for a model, not a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of waterslide decals from the British brand Xtradecal in 1:72 scale with markings for the supersonic English Electric Lightning interceptor, later built under the BAC name. The name of the sheet gives neither a particular version nor particular machines, because the manufacturer lists this line under the general type designation. Which particular machines and in which form the sheet covers is given on the packaging and in the instructions supplied; compare what the manufacturer gives on the packaging before buying, so that you get exactly the markings you are planning.
The Lightning was a British single-seat interceptor brought into service at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. In design it was an exceptional solution: its two turbojets were not side by side but one above the other in the fuselage, which gave the aircraft a narrow cross-section and at the same time an enormous thrust-to-weight ratio. The result was a rate of climb that made it one of the fastest-climbing production aircraft anywhere at the time it entered service. A swept lifting surface with a large sweep angle and a frontal circular air intake with a central cone make up its unmistakable silhouette. It spent most of its service in the interceptor role, meant for a rapid climb to great height; a number of machines flew in a glossy bare-metal finish without camouflage, while others were given the usual gray and green camouflage.
The Lightning is often built in a glossy metal finish, and it is precisely there that silvering troubles decals most. A metal surface is smooth, but many metallic paints stay microscopically rough once dry, and air is then trapped under the decal and a white veil appears around it. The answer is simple: seal the metal coat with a thin gloss varnish before the decals and let it cure properly. On a saturated or dark base, reckon with light decals showing through; it helps to lay a lighter shade under the place of the decal beforehand. Apply the softener once the decal is dry and let it work without touching it, because on a narrow fuselage with many panels the film shifts easily otherwise.
This is an accessory for a model. The sheet contains neither a kit, paints nor glue.
