About product

A bomb bay for the Bristol Beaufort Mk.I in 1:72 scale, CMK

A resin detail set that replaces the bomb bay area in the base kit. Kits usually treat this part as a smooth surface or a shallow tub with no internal structure, which shows above all when you want to display the bomb bay open. The casting brings the internal structure of the bay with ribs and surface detail that cannot be done in injected plastic at 1:72 scale. The set is cast to fit one particular base kit in this scale, so with other kits of the same aircraft check the fit. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory to one.

The real subject

The Bristol Beaufort Mk.I was a British twin-engine torpedo bomber that served during the Second World War mainly with Coastal Command. Its tasks were attacks on enemy shipping, mine laying and reconnaissance over the sea. That is exactly why it had a sizeable bay under the fuselage that could take a torpedo or a bomb load, and this bay is one of its most prominent design features. The Beaufort also became the basis for the later and far better known Beaufighter.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent from the mold disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, and on large surfaces work the cut gradually from both sides. Sand the remainders back wet and with your airways protected, as resin dust should not be inhaled. The set calls for cutting into the plastic of the base kit, so try everything dry first and remove material in small steps. It is bonded with super glue, as cement for plastic does not work here. Spray the inside with primer and the base shade before you close the fuselage, as later you will not get inside. Edge highlighting and fine grubbiness will give the bay depth.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of British Coastal Command aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to display the bomb bay open
  • Those bothered by an empty and smooth area under the fuselage
  • More experienced modelers who are ready to modify plastic and work with resin

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a detail set for one part of the aircraft, and the base kit has to be obtained separately.

Yes, count on it. The set replaces part of the fuselage, so the original plastic has to be removed and the fit tried dry as you go.

Resin sets are cast to fit one particular kit. With another kit of the same aircraft you therefore have to count on modifications.

Before the fuselage is closed up and glued. Once the model is finished you will practically not get inside.
