The masking set of the highest grade for building a model of the British Blackburn Buccaneer carrier attack aircraft in the S.2C version, 1:72 scale. The templates are machine cut from kabuki paper, that is from a thin Japanese paper with a low-tack adhesive. The set is an accessory to a kit, not a model.
The glazing frames can be solved on a model in two ways. A decal is quick, but it stays on the model as a thin layer of film that has a sheen of its own and that breaks or silvers on an intricate surface. A mask, by contrast, serves only temporarily: real paint is sprayed under it and once it is removed the frame stays in the same shade and sheen as the rest of the airframe. The transition is therefore natural and durable. The price is longer work and the need to finish the edge properly. On display models a mask pays off practically every time, while for a quick build a decal may do.
Before masking, wash the glazing in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry, as grease is the most common cause of paint flowing under the edge. Finish the edge of the mask with a toothpick and check the model against the light before spraying. First spray a very thin coat of paint onto the edge alone, which will seal any micro-gaps, and only then the full coats. Once the masks are off, let the model stand and remove any adhesive residue with a cotton swab and water, not with alcohol, which could attack the clear part. Protect the finished glazing with clear coat only on the frames, and leave the clear area unvarnished so that it stays perfectly transparent.
