A short-run injection-molded kit of the Soviet self-propelled BM-8-24 rocket launcher in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ACE. Besides the plastic parts the package holds a larger number of photo-etched parts, from which above all the launch rails themselves and the rockets are built, and one-piece rubber tracks. Because of the number of tiny photo-etched parts this is not a kit for complete beginners, but the result is an unusually finely rendered model.
The BM-8-24 was one of the tracked patterns of Soviet salvo rocket launchers of the Second World War. It came about by converting the T-60 light tank: in place of the turret the chassis received a supporting structure with launch rails for 82 mm unguided rockets. The figure in the designation gives the number of rails. A tracked chassis gave the weapon mobility in ground where wheeled vehicles would have bogged down, and another advantage was the ability to fire a salvo quickly and move to another position. T-60 tanks were being built in large numbers at the time, so it was an available basis.
The most demanding part of the build is the superstructure with the rails: bend the photo-etched parts over the edge of a steel ruler and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue in small sections, so that the geometry of the whole is kept. Finish and paint the chassis and the running gear before the tracks are fitted. Try the one-piece rubber tracks dry before fitting them and warm them in hot water if need be, so that they follow the wheels better. In color the model is usually finished in a uniform dark green, which is brought to life by dust pigments on the chassis and fine chipping of the edges with a dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
