This color base from Kelik shows the circular area used at airfields to calibrate aircraft compasses. Unlike deck motifs it is not tied to a single ship or to a single period, so it will serve under a very wide range of machines in 1:72 scale.
An aircraft's compass is affected by the metal of the airframe and by the electrical equipment, so it has to be calibrated after repairs or after a new instrument is fitted. For that the machine is towed to a specially marked area away from hangars and metal structures, turned onto exact headings and the deviations are recorded. That is the scene the motif recalls.
For a modeler such an area is rewarding: the circle holds the composition, a model placed in the middle looks good from every side and nothing in the motif settles which air arm or which period the aircraft belongs to. One base can therefore serve several different machines from a collection in turn. That pays off especially when a modeler does not want to buy a separate base for every new piece of work.
