About product

Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.III RAAF decals 1:72 (Art Scale)

The fourth part of a themed range of decals in 1:72 scale from Art Scale, this time devoted to the Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.III machines of the Royal Australian Air Force in the Pacific. The set is a separate accessory for modelers who want to give a finished model markings other than those offered by the sheet supplied in the kit. The box holds decals only.

The real subject

The designation Kittyhawk Mk.III was carried by Commonwealth air forces for Curtiss P-40 machines of the later production batches, which were given a more powerful engine and a number of small airframe changes compared with the first versions. It remained a single-engine all-metal fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine, a prominent radiator under the nose and a low-set wing. In Australian service these machines flew in the southwest Pacific mostly as fighter-bombers against ground targets and shipping, where their toughness and load-carrying capacity told. Telling the individual P-40 variants apart on a model is a matter of details such as the length of the rear fuselage, the shape of the engine cowling and the arrangement of the exhausts, so before building it is worth checking which version your kit actually represents.

Tips for applying the decals

The base has to be smooth and glossy, otherwise a silvery rim will stay around the decal. Spray the painted model with gloss varnish and let it cure thoroughly. Cut the decals out close along the print, soak them in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let them rest until the backing slides freely. Slide them into place, adjust the position with a soft brush and blot the excess water away with absorbent paper. To settle them over engraved lines and rivets, use a decal softener and leave the joint undisturbed to dry. Finally, wash the surface clean of glue residue and seal the model with varnish in the sheen you have chosen.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building later versions of the Curtiss P-40 in 1:72 scale.
  • Anyone interested in Commonwealth air forces and in the Pacific theater.
  • Builders who collect the following parts of the same themed range.
  • Collectors who want several marking variants of one type in a display case.

The box holds decals only. The kit, paints, varnishes and decal softener are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is only a decal sheet; the Curtiss P-40 model in 1:72 scale is sold separately.

The set is tied by theme to the Mk.III version. The individual P-40 versions differ in airframe details, so check both the placement and the suitability of the markings before you apply them.

You do not. Each part is a separate set with different subjects and can be used independently.

Always apply them over gloss varnish, settle them with a softener and spray the whole model with a final varnish once dry.
