An injection-molded plastic kit of the mobile launch system for the DF-41 ballistic missile in 1:72 scale. The real subject is a multi-axle special chassis carrying a transport and launch container, so the finished model is long and low and comes across more as a large utility vehicle than as a combat machine. The exact make-up of the package, the number of parts and the decal schemes are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The DF-41 is a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile with solid propellant. The basis of the mobile variant is the launch vehicle, which carries the missile in a closed container and raises it to the vertical before launch. A multi-axle chassis with steerable front and rear wheel groups and hydraulic outriggers allows movement over paved and unpaved roads and deployment away from a fixed position. In modeling this kind of carrier is recognized precisely by the length of the frame, the number of axles and the massive lifting mechanism of the container.
What matters most is sitting flat. Build the long chassis with its many axles on a flat surface and let the glue cure thoroughly, or the model will not sit on all its wheels. Build and paint the axles and the wheels separately from the frame; it is then easier to get at the detail. Before gluing, check the container for gaps at the lengthwise split, because on a smooth cylindrical surface every transition shows. Use liquid cement on the plastic, fill the gaps with putty and sand the rest with fine abrasive paper. Do the painting with an airbrush in thin coats, spray a gloss base under the decals and keep the weathering restrained. Dust and light wear on the wheels and the underside of the frame look more natural on this kind of machine than pronounced rusty effects.
