This injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese brand Hasegawa in 1:72 scale represents the single-seat F-35A, that is the version with conventional take-off and landing. According to the name the package is devoted to the Japanese form with the 6th Air Wing, with the year 2025 given as its time frame.
The F-35 is a single-seat, single-engine multirole combat aircraft built around a reduced radar signature and extensive integration of sensors. The A version is the basic variant with conventional take-off and landing, intended for land airfields; among other things it differs from the other versions in having neither a lift fan nor the strengthened structure for operating from a deck. Characteristic features of the airframe are the faceted edges of the fuselage, internal weapons bays and a single jet engine of great thrust. Japan took the type into service as a replacement for older fighters and operates it with several units.
On an aircraft with a reduced signature the result is decided above all by the surface: the seams between the parts are filled and sanded smooth, because every step or scratch on so clean an airframe stands out at once. Finish the cockpit and the nose landing gear bay before the fuselage is glued together. The gray finish is sprayed over a primer in thin coats; the matte, slightly uneven surface of the real subject is well imitated by a light shading of the individual panels. Restore the engraved lines with a scribing needle after sanding. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals and unify the finish with a matte varnish. Keep the weathering very restrained, as modern machines tend to be well looked after and overdone weathering looks unconvincing.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
