An injection-molded plastic model of the American long-range and all-weather fighter F-82H Twin Mustang in 1:72 scale from Special Hobby. The distinctive twin-fuselage machine was created by joining two modified P-51 Mustang airframes through a common center wing section and tailplane. It is a multimedia kit that adds clear, resin and photo-etched parts to the plastic, together with decals for four color schemes of aircraft from Alaska: two all-black night finishes and two in natural metal with striking red wingtips and tail.
The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was the last piston fighter taken into service by the US Air Force. It was originally conceived as a long-range escort fighter with its crew in two fuselages, and later it served mainly as a night and all-weather interceptor. The H version was adapted to the harsh conditions of Alaska, where its endurance and its radar let it guard the northern airspace in the first years of the Cold War.
Wash the mold release residue off the resin parts, cut the casting blocks away and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); join the plastic with liquid modeling cement and sand the joints. The pair of glazed cockpits calls for careful masking and polishing. Apply a primer before painting. Glossy natural metal is best handled with an airbrush and metallic paints or polishing pigments; apply the highly visible red areas through masks.
