This is not an aircraft kit but a small resin accessory for the modeler already building a Wildcat. Carrier fighters carried a folded inflatable life raft in a stowage in the fuselage behind the cockpit. On a model this spot can be finished two ways: closed, or with the cover swung open and the contents visible. The second option is exactly why an accessory like this exists — an open stowage draws the eye to the middle of the fuselage, which is otherwise usually empty.
Sets of this kind are among the most rewarding accessories there are. They call for no rebuilding of the model and no changes to its structure, yet the result shows at once. In 1:72 scale it also holds true that a small but cleanly executed detail lifts the impression of the whole model more than an extensive rebuild nobody will ever see. Resin handles the soft shapes of folded rubberized fabric and fine straps better than injection-molded plastic.
First rid the castings of mold release agent by washing them in warm soapy water. Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw; with small parts it helps to hold the part down in pieces of masking tape so that it does not fly off. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), ideally the gel version, which gives you time to line things up. Lay down a primer before painting. The raft is painted yellow or orange in a shade to suit the particular machine you are building, and it pays to bring it up with a fine dark wash in the folds, so that the texture of the folded fabric stands out. Finish the edges of the stowage with a brush to match the surrounding fuselage finish.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
