About product

Vought F4U-1 Corsair 1:72 - a Hobby Boss Plastic Kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the early form of the American Vought F4U-1 Corsair carrier fighter in 1:72 scale from Hobby Boss. The model belongs to the easy assembly range of simplified kits with a lower part count, a three-blade propeller and the characteristic inverted gull wing. It is quick to build and accessible to less experienced modelers. The enclosed instructions give the exact contents of the package and the marking schemes.

The real subject

The F4U-1 was the first combat version of the Corsair, one of the highest-performing piston fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 series radial engine of around 2000 horsepower, and its characteristic bent wing allowed a large three-blade propeller to be used while keeping the landing gear short. The Corsair entered the fighting in the Pacific from 1943, at first mainly from land bases with the Marine Corps, and earned a reputation as a feared opponent of Japanese fighters.

Building and painting tips

Paint the cockpit before closing up the fuselage and clean the flash off the parts. Apply a primer to the plastic. Early Corsairs usually carried the three-color naval camouflage (two blues and a white underside) or the overall dark blue finish of later machines. The bent wing and the lower surfaces owe their result to an even airbrush coat. Pick out the engraved detail with a wash and apply the decals onto a gloss coat. A hint of salt and chipped paint on the leading edges give the machine an authentic worn look.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of US Navy aviation and the fighting in the Pacific.
  • For beginners who appreciate a quick build with a lower part count.
  • For collectors who want to distinguish the early F4U-1 from the later F4U-4.
  • As a rewarding model with a striking bent wing for a display case in 1:72 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The F4U-1 is the early form of the Corsair with an R-2800 series engine of around 2000 horsepower and a three-blade propeller. The later F4U-4 had a more powerful engine with water injection and a four-blade propeller with revised cowling.

Yes. It belongs to the easy assembly range with a lower part count and a simpler build, yet it has engraved detail and a clear cockpit.

The inverted gull wing allowed a large three-blade propeller to be used while keeping the short, strong landing gear needed for operation from aircraft carriers.
