A cast resin set of engine exhaust nozzles for a kit of the carrier-borne Super Hornet aircraft in the E and F versions in 1:72 scale. It is not a model of an airplane — the set replaces parts that tend to be simplified in injection-molded form. The nozzles are at the same time the place everyone looks at on a model: a thin trailing edge, the depth of the inside and fine ribbing are hard to produce in plastic, whereas in resin they can be cast more faithfully. The manufacturer is the Czech brand Brengun. The castings are shaped for the Revell kit.
The Super Hornet is the enlarged and reworked successor of the original Hornet. It has a larger airframe, different leading-edge sections of the wing and angular air intakes; the E version is single-seat and the F version two-seat. It is powered by a pair of General Electric F414 engines. The look of the exhaust section of the engine on the Super Hornet differs from the older type and tends to be one of the first details by which it can be told whether a model matches its version. The nozzles moreover take on heat discoloration on an aircraft in service, which is a rewarding subject for painting and weathering.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the release agent from the mold disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, do not break them; do any sanding wet and with a respirator. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint and shade the inside of the nozzle before you glue it to the fuselage — once glued, it is hard to reach inside. Metallic sheen and heat discoloration look good in a combination of metallic shades applied with an airbrush and fine translucent tones; the base, though, has to be smooth, otherwise a metallic finish picks out every scratch.
It is an accessory to a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
