About product

The French helmet M15 1:72

A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale, not a figure on its own and not a kit of a model. The set captures the French steel helmet of the M15 pattern, that is the type with a longitudinal crest on the crown and a rim around the circumference. It serves for completing or replacing the headgear on figures in French dress.

The real subject

The French steel helmet of the 1915 pattern was the first steel helmet of the First World War to be introduced in series, and its shape became a characteristic mark of the French soldier. The shell was fairly shallow, completed with a short peak at the front and the rear and with a longitudinal crest, which covered the ventilation opening on the crown. Besides the French army, a number of other countries used it in the same or a slightly modified form, so it suits figures outside the Western Front as well. It lasted in service far into the interwar period.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

If the figure carries headgear of its own, cut it away with a scalpel and level the crown of the head with a file, so that the new helmet seats with no gap. Try the part dry and watch the alignment of the crest with the axis of the head and the tilt of the peak over the face. It is glued with super glue, and the seam around the circumference is evened out with a thin strip of two-part filler. Spray the whole with a base coat before painting. Paint the helmet in a chosen shade of blue-gray or green according to the period you are building, lighten the crest and the rim with a fine dry brush and draw a dark wash in under the peak, so that a shadow arises over the face.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas from the First World War and the interwar period in 1:72
  • modelers who convert figures into French dress
  • collectors who take care over the correct allocation of equipment to an army and a period
  • more experienced modelers working with very small parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
