About product

The German helmet M16 1:72

A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale, not a figure on its own and not a kit of a model. The set captures the German steel helmet of the M16 pattern, that is a deep shell with a drawn-out nape section and with lugs at the sides. It serves for completing or replacing the headgear on figures from the period of the First World War.

The real subject

The steel helmet of the 1916 pattern replaced the older headgear and its shape grew out of the aim of covering not only the crown but the nape and the temples as well. From that comes the markedly drawn-down rear and side edge, which gives the helmet an unmistakable silhouette. At the sides of the shell there are lugs, which served as ventilation openings and at the same time as an attachment for an additional frontal plate. The basic shape stayed in use in the following patterns as well and in a slightly modified form it survived into the interwar period, so the accessory suits later figures too. Watch the period you are building, though: the helmets introduced later have shorter edges and a different profile.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Cut the original headgear away with a scalpel and level the crown of the head with a file, so that the helmet seats with no gap. Try the part dry, check that the side lugs lie symmetrically and watch how deep the helmet sits over the brow. It is glued with super glue; even the seam around the circumference out with a thin strip of two-part filler. Spray the whole with a base coat before painting. Paint the helmet in a chosen shade, lighten the edges of the drawn-out rim with a fine dry brush and draw a dark wash in under the rim, so that the shadow around the face and the neck stands out.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas from the First World War in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who convert figures into the dress of a different period
  • collectors who take care over the correct allocation of equipment to an army and a period
  • more experienced modelers working with very small parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

It is not. It is an accessory intended for modifying an already purchased figure in 1:72 scale.

The same line also includes variants with the epithet detail, in this scale and in others. What exactly distinguishes them from the basic version is not stated in the available details.
