About product

1:72 detailing set with the gunner's seat and the MG 81Z twin machine gun for the Ju 87D/G (Special Hobby)

This is neither an aircraft model nor a whole kit, but a small accessory set for Academy and SH kits in 1:72 scale. It replaces two items of the rear station of the late Ju 87 versions: the seat of the onboard gunner and his armament, that is the twin MG 81Z machine gun. It is precisely these two parts that tend to be handled in a simplified way in basic kits, while being the most visible under the open glazing.

What the set solves

The rear part of the heavily glazed Ju 87 cockpit is the place a viewer looks at first. Injection-molded parts in 1:72 scale run up against the limits of the mold, so the barrels and the mount tend to be thicker than the scale calls for, and the seat lacks internal shaping. A detail casting allows finer shapes and sharper edges, so even a small part looks convincing close up. The set is narrowly focused, and it fulfills its role all the better for it: two key elements, no rebuilding of the whole interior.

Building tips

If the casting is resin, wash it in lukewarm soapy water before gluing to remove the mold release agent residue, otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold. Do not break the casting blocks off but cut them with a saw or a sharp scalpel and level the surface with a file. Resin parts are not glued with cement for plastic but with cyanoacrylate. Protect your airways when sanding and work wet rather than dry, so that the dust is not stirred up. The thin barrels are the most vulnerable, so leave them to the end of the build and watch out for them when handling the model. Before painting it pays to apply a thin base, as paint otherwise holds worse on a smooth surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German aircraft of the Second World War in 1:72 scale.
  • Modelers building a model with the rear station open.
  • Those who want to improve the most visible detail with the least work.
  • More experienced builders who have no trouble working with small parts and cyanoacrylate.

This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. These are two replacement detail parts for the rear station; the aircraft model has to be bought separately.

It is the twin version of the MG 81 machine gun, that is two barrels on a common mount. It was used in the defensive stations of German aircraft of the later war period.

Resin castings are glued with cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for plastic does not work on them, because it does not dissolve their surface.

Mold release agent residue is left on the surface of castings. If it is not washed off in lukewarm soapy water, both paint and glue hold badly.
