Dead Design 1:72 Ki-43 I Hayabusa national insignia masks is a set of templates for spraying the Japanese insignia onto a model of the early version of the famous army fighter. Target kits: Fine Molds and Fujimi.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Dead Design set replaces decals with the Japanese national insignia by spraying through a painting template. It is tied to the first production version of the Ki-43, that is to the aircraft with a lighter structure and a smaller engine than the later forms. The masks are cut for the Fine Molds and Fujimi kits.
The Hayabusa has a slender, markedly rounded fuselage and a wing with a deeply curved leading edge. It is exactly there that the typical problem with decals appears: a flat film crinkles on a doubly curved surface and without a softener there is no getting it over. A mask behaves differently, because it follows the shape as it is applied and the paint is then laid directly onto the surface. The result holds the shape of the disc even in places where a decal would ripple.
Before masking, go over the model with a dusting cloth, so that no fibers are left on the surface. Lay the template on from the middle of the disc and press the edge down gradually around the perimeter, so that no folds form on the curve. Spray in short bursts perpendicular to the surface. On the early Hayabusa the red disc alone is usually enough, but even so it pays to back it with white, so that the shade stays fresh. Lift the mask off as soon as the paint has set.
It pays to lay a covering white under the disc even where the camouflage is lighter. Red pigments are translucent and without a base the shade behaves differently on every kind of finish, so the discs on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing then do not have the same depth.
