About product

Ki-61-I Tei Hien – control surfaces in 1:72 scale (CMK)

This item is an accessory for a model already under way, not a kit. The set is aimed at the Ki-61-I Tei version, that is, the late variant of the Japanese Hien fighter with a lengthened fuselage. It is exactly on that one that the tail surfaces are worth some attention: the slender fuselage with its extended rear leads the viewer's eye straight to the tail, and if the rudder and elevators are lined up flat and without any structure, the model looks lifeless. The target kit is Hasegawa.

A static model versus a model in motion

Deflected surfaces are a simple trick for giving a static model a sense of life. A model built with the ailerons drooping slightly and the rudder deflected looks as if someone had just parked it rather than as if someone had just made it. The second advantage of resin parts is purely a matter of craft: a part cast on its own has a sharp trailing edge, which on plastic you either sand away or leave thick. And the trailing edge is one of the things a person notices first on a finished model.

Usage and painting tips

The procedure is the same as with other resin accessories: wash in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw, level the mating surfaces by sanding with respiratory protection and glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Cut the original surface away along the engraved outline, seat the new one dry first and only then fix it in place. Fill and sand the gap smooth, otherwise the clear coat will reveal it. Paint only after gluing and together with the whole model. If you are finishing a machine with marked wear, the transitions between the fixed and the moving surfaces are a rewarding place for some gentle accentuation in a dark shade.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Japanese fighter subjects in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want tail surfaces with a sharp trailing edge
  • anyone interested in finishing a model with the surfaces deflected
  • those with experience of cutting and gluing resin

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the designation of one of the late production versions of the Ki-61-I fighter. The set is cut for that one; on other versions, check the shape of the surfaces.

Yes. The resin part goes in place of the original section of the wing or tail, and the cut follows the engraved outline.

Only after it has been glued on and the gap filled, together with the rest of the model. Otherwise a visible difference in shade will appear.
